When you catch a campus shuttle this fall, you might notice a new look. Northwestern has rolled out a fleet of 12 new GILLIG electric hybrid buses. These state-of-the-art vehicles have replaced the University’s aging shuttle fleet, offering a quieter, cleaner ride for students, faculty and staff traveling around and between the Evanston and Chicago campuses.
The new buses are part of a broader initiative to modernize campus transportation while reducing environmental impact. Building on last year’s announcement of Northwestern’s transition from diesel to hybrid-electric vehicles, the new bus fleet represents the next phase in delivering efficient, eco-conscious transit options.
“These buses are more than just a new look for our fleet,” said Paul Merkey, associate director of Transportation and Parking. “They’re a reflection of our values: sustainability, innovation and care for the communities we serve.”
Battery-powered zones
The new fleet uses geofencing technology. With the help of GPS, the buses will automatically switch to battery power when entering designated battery power zones, which include residential neighborhoods in Evanston, areas around shuttle stops and key locations on the Chicago campus.
By switching to battery power in these zones, the buses will significantly reduce both noise and emissions — a welcome change for pedestrians, nearby residents and anyone waiting at a stop.
“Whether you’re walking through campus or catching a shuttle near your home, you’ll notice the difference,” Merkey said. “These buses are designed to be quieter and cleaner where it matters most.”
A smarter, greener fleet
The GILLIG hybrid buses use a combination of electric energy generated during operation and diesel fuel when additional power is needed. The dual system improves fuel efficiency and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. According to Northwestern’s sustainability team, the environmental benefit is equivalent to removing three traditional diesel buses from the road.
Each bus is also equipped with modern accessibility features, including low-floor boarding and ADA-compliant seating, ensuring all members of the Northwestern community can ride comfortably.
