Named the American Public Transit Association’s Outstanding Agency of the Year in 2023, PSTA’s leadership in transit innovation is clear. With GILLIG’s Battery Electric buses now joining their fleet, PSTA is fulfilling a long-term commitment to sustainable, zero-emission options without compromising performance. The buses’ 686 kWh energy storage allows for extended ranges on a single charge, providing quiet, reliable, and emissions-free service throughout Pinellas County.
This transition also included the installation of 15 ChargePoint chargers, deployed through GILLIG’s Charging Solutions team, who helped guide PSTA on establishing one of the most extensive fleet charging infrastructures on the East Coast. These infrastructure upgrades ensure that PSTA’s new battery-electric fleet integrates seamlessly, while maintaining the operational strength and dependability they expect from GILLIG.
“For over three decades, our collaboration with GILLIG has been instrumental in offering safe, reliable, and now zero-emissions sustainable transit options to our community,” said Brad Miller, CEO of PSTA. “With the launch of GILLIG’s Battery Electric buses, we’re taking a major step in our ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship. These buses represent a key move towards an even more sustainable and equitable future for PSTA!”
PSTA has long prioritized environmental responsibility. By replacing aging Diesel buses with GILLIG Battery Electric models, the agency anticipates saving approximately 11 million gallons of diesel fuel over the buses’ lifetimes, significantly cutting emissions and supporting a healthier community. Already operating the largest fleet of GILLIG Hybrid buses in Florida, PSTA’s adoption of Battery Electric models solidifies their role as a sustainability leader in public transit.
Looking forward, PSTA is aiming to eliminate Diesel buses from its fleet within the next decade, setting a standard for others to follow. With GILLIG at their side, PSTA is proving that effective, reliable transit can go hand in hand with environmental stewardship, creating a lasting positive impact for Pinellas County. This collaboration reflects how GILLIG’s customer partnerships drive innovation and success, empowering agencies to build transit solutions that resonate with the communities they serve.
