GILLIG Reaches 100th Battery Electric Bus Production Milestone

Updated: Oct 7, 2021

Livermore, Calif., Oct. 6, 2021 – California Clean Air Day got off to a great start at GILLIG’s headquarters, where the company announced it had completed production of its 100th battery electric bus. The bus is scheduled for delivery to Metro Transit in St. Louis, Missouri in October. By the end of 2021, Metro Transit will have a total of 10 GILLIG battery electric buses in its fleet.

“We set out to do whatever we could to make sure we had the best electric bus in the industry, and that is what we’ve done,” said GILLIG President and CEO Derek Maunus. “I couldn’t be prouder of the amount of hard work and energy that went into this accomplishment. This truly has been the most remarkable team effort.”

Since introducing the first battery electric bus in 2016, GILLIG has continued to add customers for the bus. More than 50 customers across the country are now operating GILLIG’s battery electric bus or have orders for the vehicles. GILLIG is currently booking new bus orders into 2023.

GILLIG’s current electric bus is a second-generation product built on the company’s proven Low Floor Platform. The bus delivers industry-leading performance and provides unmatched reliability and durability. It features a Cummins powertrain and is supported by Cummins service centers located throughout the country.

GILLIG’s battery electric bus incorporates learnings from decades of vehicle electrification experience. Through generations of diesel-electric hybrid and overhead trolley electric buses and its first-generation fuel cell buses deployed in 2001, GILLIG has established best practices and validated many of the technologies used on today’s electric buses. These products build upon the legacy of excellence and proven transit performance of the more than 27,000 GILLIG buses in service throughout the United States today.

GILLIG conducts rigorous engineering validation testing on all products before they go into production. The battery electric bus completed testing with Federal Transit Administration’s Bus Test Program at Altoona, Pennsylvania, in July where it scored exceptionally well in all measurement categories but stood out for durability and performance.
